Relearning How to Imagine

When we are children, the art of imagining comes naturally. As adults, we are usually taught that imagining is irresponsible or a waste of time. But what if it isn’t?

Your Imagination can be a Powerful Tool

Do you remember playing make-believe when you were a child? I can remember many things I imagined as a child. The chicken coop was a spaceship. Lines drawn in the dirt outlined the rooms of my dream house. There is so much fun and freedom in using your imagination! As children, these imaginative games come naturally. So why do we stop? In most cases, well-meaning adults told us we needed to “grow up,” and that meant being “responsible” and not wasting time on things like daydreams or making things up.

As a young adult, I began learning about the law of attraction and how we are creating our reality with our thoughts and energy. One of the techniques taught in manifesting is to imagine or visualize what you want to create, and feel yourself in that energy. So – I was given permission to imagine again! But interestingly, this act of using my imagination no longer came so naturally to me. Honestly, it felt a bit like a chore that I had to put on my to-do list, rather than the activity I loved to do as a child. I think this was partly because I’d been taught for so long that imagining is a waste of time, but I also realized there may be another reason.

What helped me make imagining fun again? Remove the limits! When I was a child, I placed no limits on my imagination. I didn’t care if the chicken coop would never actually be a spaceship or if my carefully drawn rooms on a dirt road would not grow to become the castle in my imagination. The fun part was the imaginary world itself, and in my mind there were no limits to what I could create. So lately I’ve started incorporating that sense of freedom and expansiveness into my “imaginings,” and it puts me in a very different feeling of enjoyment and fun.

So instead of trying to picture a scene from my future life (where my mind automatically places boundaries based on the life I’ve lived so far) I free my mind to imagine anything, just like I did as a child. In my mind, I can fly. I can swim with dolphins and understand the wisdom they speak to me. I can run super fast and do cartwheels and flips and feel endless energy and power in my perfect physical body. I can hang out with my ancestors, angels, or magical fairies. I can go literally anywhere and do anything!

Once again I’ve returned to the childhood innocence of actually wanting to use my imagination. It no longer feels like a chore, but a treat! And, this excited, expansive feeling I get when I create these magical scenes in my mind is creating a positive energy in me that will attract positive things into my life. Kind of a win-win! Try a simple activity to see if you can bring some imagination fun back into your life.

Imagining With no Limits

Find a time when you can be quiet for a few minutes. Set a timer (3-5 minutes is a good place to start), close your eyes and start imagining. If you have a favorite place you already know, you can imagine yourself there to begin. Or if you love certain types of environments (like a beach or mountaintop, for example) you can start there. Then just practice letting your mind move freely with what would be fun. You can do anything physically, introduce people or animals (real or imaginary) into your scene, imagine a structure to investigate, etc.. See where your mind takes you!
