Accepting What Is

If there is something about your current circumstances you don’t like, it can seem counterintuitive to be told to accept it. However, this practice is actually one of the most important things you can do if you’re trying to improve your life.

Accepting Current Circumstances can Make Life Easier

Learning to accept your current life circumstances is one of the most important steps we can take on our path to creating an improved life and manifesting our desires. The underlying reason for this is that our energy is what is creating our life and either drawing to us or pushing away the things we desire. So when we are resisting our current situation, we are actually creating an energy that holds us away from what we really want. There is a saying “what you resist persists” that is at play here.

Let’s take an example. Say you dislike your job. Since you are likely spending some amount of time at this job, it can be very easy to get caught up in your unhappiness. You may be noticing coworkers who upset you, feel like you are underappreciated, or underpaid, or doing things you don’t enjoy, etc. So if someone asks you to start by accepting this job as a first step to move to a better job, that probably doesn’t feel natural. It may feel like this acceptance would mean giving permission to the things you dislike, giving your annoying coworkers a free pass to be jerks, or your boss the sign that it’s ok to underpay or overwork you.

In reality, finding acceptance for the situation isn’t about your coworkers or your boss. It’s only about you and your energy! When you put your focus on the things you don’t like, you are creating resistance within yourself. Creating resistance means you are pushing against that unwanted situation with your thoughts and emotions, which results in negative feelings. If you are focused on the things you don’t want, you likely feel stressed, upset, angry, or disillusioned.

So the point of learning to accept is simply about shifting your energy. First, recognize that you can choose what you focus on in any given moment, no matter what is happening around you. Ask yourself, what can you do to be in a more positive state? You could start by removing your attention as much as possible from the people or situations you don’t like. You can look for things that you do appreciate about your current job and focus on those things instead. You can use mantras or visualizations to focus your attention on more positive ideas of what a job could look like. Pay attention when you speak to notice if you are spending time complaining about the current situation, and try to eliminate this behavior.

Then, as your energy improves, you will start to attract the new energy you are now emanating. The more you notice and appreciate the things you like about your current situation, the more things like this will show up in your experience. You may find yourself even enjoying your current job more. Having this new happy attitude is also what can lead to situations that enable the new job to show up for you.
