Practicing gratitude has so many great benefits for your overall state of mind and well-being. At any time in your day, you can pause and think about something you are grateful for. The more you do this practice, the more you will remember to practice it, and the more you will recognize that there is to be grateful for in your life. Here is a technique that you can use to really dive deeper into the space of gratitude.

The idea of this practice is to think about not just the thing you’re grateful for, but try to think about everything you can think of that brought that thing into your life and feel gratitude for those as well. Here is one example. I am very grateful for my dog. I love him so much and often look at him and feel gratitude that he is in our lives. But I can also go deeper. I’m grateful for the breeder that took the time to raise his parents and bring him into the world, and for the love and care she gave him before we brought him home. I’m grateful the Internet and related applications exist so we could become aware he was available. I’m also grateful for the special food we are able to feed him so his tummy feels good. I’m grateful there is a website where I can easily purchase this food and for the delivery person that brings it to our door. I’m also grateful for the veterinarian that helped us figure out that this food would be good for him.

Here is another example. Let’s say there is a restaurant you like to go to. You can be grateful that this restaurant exists, that they are able to obtain the foods that they serve to you, that someone grew and harvested these foods and delivered them to the restaurant. You can feel gratitude for all the employees of the restaurant that made a decision to go into the restaurant to prepare food, make a clean environment, seat you, serve you your food, etc. You can be grateful for the electricity, lights, furniture, heat or AC that allow the restaurant to have a pleasant, comfortable environment, or to the construction workers that built the restaurant to begin with. How many incredible things had to happen for you to be able to eat a meal at this restaurant?

See how this works? This can be a really fun and rewarding experience to put yourself in a happy, grateful state of mind. And the happier you are, the more happy experiences you can create in your life. Have fun!

Gratitude for something that comforts you

Take a moment to think about something that brings you comfort in your life. This could be a person, a place, a pet or something like the heat or AC in your home, a cozy blanket or sweater, or a comfortable piece of furniture. Think creatively about the things in your life that bring you comfort. Next think about your chosen topic and see if you can expand your gratitude to everything it took for it to be a part of your life. You can write about this in your journal also.
