Looking for miracles
There is a saying that goes “There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.” You may have also heard the saying “miracles don’t happen every day.” One definition of the word miracle is “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by scientific or natural laws.” By that definition, I suppose science has an explanation for most things that happen in everyday life. But what if we make a conscious decision to live as if everything in life is a miracle?
A few years ago a wildfire went through our area. The fields all around were blackened and barren after this fire. It appeared nothing had survived. To look at it, one might expect we’d be left with an empty dirt field as the result of this burning. But the next spring, green grasses poked up through the black ground and very soon the fields were once again lush and green with waving grasses and wildflowers. I recognize there are scientific explanations for this, however, as I witnessed this new growth, it felt truly amazing and magical!
Anyone who lives in a seasonal climate can see similar miracles each spring. Every spring here in Colorado all of the trees leaf out, flowers grow, everything turns from brown to green. Throughout the winter the trees are bare and all of the grasses and plants are brown and lifeless, but each spring, with the warmth of the sun and longer days, everything comes back to life. Isn’t that kind of miraculous if you think about it?
What about rainbows? I admit, I don’t fully understand the science behind rainbows. 🙂Something about sunlight going through a raindrop? But how does that chance event evoke these brilliant beams of colorful light that suspend themselves in the sky long enough for us to witness? Sometimes there are even two! Kind of miraculous, right?
These may sound like silly examples, but if you make it a point to look for miracles in your everyday life, it will give you a new appreciation for the world around you. I also believe that the more you are looking for miracles and labeling things as miracles, the more you’ll notice truly amazing things that more people might label as miracles. Try it!

Be aware of nature
Try to step outside today and just be aware of the natural environment. Can you hear birds or see any animals? Look at whatever plant life is around you. Feel the breeze and see the sky or clouds. Even when it’s raining, that water is nourishing the plants and animals. Spend a few moments feeling gratitude for these miracles that are around you all the time. You can write down your observations in your journal.
